Qayyem Methodology

Qayyem Methodology

Why did we create Qayyem's platform?

Based on our absolute belief in the importance of video games for our children and in an effort to take care for them and spare them any harm that may impinge on their righteous values, we at Misk Values and under the slogan of "Awareness Not Deprivation" have a message regarding these video games. Because we know that our values and ethics differ from other countries
in the world, we felt an urgent need to evaluate the content of our children's games. We sought to catch and highlight all aspects that are not in line with our Islamic values and teachings to provide a safe environment for our children to play in and help every responsible parent and guardian relax and feel at peace towards their children.
We do not aim at evaluating the quality of video games, nor are we interested in the level of a game's difficulty or skills needed to play it. Rather, we objectively provide a brief description of the content of the game and show the appropriate age to play each game. Accordingly, the evaluation on Qayyem is built on two main parts, the first is evaluating the content of the game and the second is age classification.

First: Content Evaluation

This evaluation is based on a brief description of the video game and has five types of remarks for the games: religious, psychological, behavioral, moral, and financial.

Religious Remarks:
These remarks about things that impinge on the values and provisions of Islam.
Psychological Remarks:
These are remarks that negatively affect the psychological aspect of the player.
Behavioural Remarks:
These are remarks about things that negatively affect the clear-headedness of the player.
Moral Remarks:
These are remarks about the things that impinge on decency, morality and good behaviour.
Financial Remarks:
These are remarks about the things that impinge on values and integrity regarding finance and money.

Second: Age classification

This classification is based on the suitability of video games to the different age groups of players, starting from age two and above. It is divided as follows:

2+ Years
This classification means that the content of the video game is suitable for all age groups starting at the age of 2 years old. It also indicates that the video game may contain some acts of violence but in a comical way that does not enable the child to make a link between the fictional animated characters on the screen and real humans. In this category, the game should be free of any frightening scenes, sounds, or images for young children.
7+ Years
This category means that the content of the video game is suitable for children aged 7 years and above, which is similar and close to the 2+ years category, but the games in this group may contain some scary scenes, sounds, or images that are allowed for this age group.
10+ Years
This category means that the content of the video game is suitable for children aged 10 years and above. Games of this category contain scenes of violence done by fictional characters, animated characters, or animals but not by humans.
15+ Years
This category means that the video game content is suitable for young adults aged 15 years or older. The content of the games in this category may include horror and violence portrayed closely to what happens in real life.
21+ Years
This category means that the content of the video game is suitable for young people aged 21 and above. It means that games of this category may contain scenes of extreme violence and unbelievable brutality, and may prompt the player to react to such violence with disgust.

How ESRB appeared?

In the 1990s, some companies that develop and publish video games were criticized by American parents and legislators on the basis that there is a correlation between the violent scenes found in some video games and the real violence perpetrated by some children in real life. This controversy sparked much debate about the constitutionality of imposing restrictions on the content of video games. This is how the US video game classification system, known as the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), was established as an attempt to avoid legislative restrictions through adopting a voluntary system where volunteers evaluate video games to guide parents regarding the content of the video game and the appropriate age classification to play it.

What is ESRB?

ESRB is a group of volunteers who evaluate and classify the content of video games that are played on multiple consoles, such as Xbox and PlayStation, or on PCs. This rating system does not evaluate the quality of video games. It objectively provides a brief description of the content of the game and shows if the game contains something that is considered undesirable by the rating system administrators. The system then issues a classification for the game and briefly explains its content, such as "These games contain violent scenes" or other descriptions.

What is PEGI?

For a long time, video games in the UK were classified by the British Board of Film Classification – BBFC, which was originally established to classify films exhibited at cinemas and video works released on physical media. This has left the UK lagging behind other European countries with regard to age classification systems for video games. Therefore, the British Government has called for a new classification system for video games to be overseen by a new body called the Video Standards Council - VSC.

The British VSC has decided to adopt a classification system called the Pan European Game Information System - PEGI. This system gives the video game an age classification, as well as other content descriptors, such as violence or bad language. Thus, the UK's video games rating system has become more aligned with the rating systems in the European Union..
